Publishing 101: Are Promotions Important For Writers?

When you write, think like a writer but when you sell your books think like a business person.

Remember that in the end, books are a retail business. And all retail busisnesses are promotion intensive.

We have this phrase amongst marketers:

‘You’re only as good as your last, and next promotion.’

Which is why I genuinely feel it is important for writers to constantly keep promoting themselves. Generate noise. Build hype. Invest in ads.

Remember that almost every eighth person you meet these days is an ‘author.’ With the advent of kindle direct publishing and several other minimal cost publishing options, the market is getting saturated. Darlin, there are a million books out there. You’re just another that got lost in the sea of poorly edited, self published crap on Amazon.

So how do you differentiate yourself from all the crowd, all the noise? How to you get visibility?

Promotions.

If you aren’t promoting, you are stalling.

You aren’t growing.

It’s very simple. You need an audiance for your work.

Your wife and your three friends are not enough to generate the revenue you need, even to cover your initial investment costs!

I find it very sad, when new authors invest tens of thousands [even lakhs sometimes] into one self publishing scam after another, and they sell LESS than fifty books in total. As a person who has done extensive research on this industry for more than seven years now, I have first hand experience in assuring you that IT IS POSSIBLE to have a decent passive income, if not a steady monthly cashflow from your book sales, if you just STOP BEING BLIND AND GET ALERT regarding the trends.

Sales count. Numbers are important.

It’s not a gamble. It’s about intelligence and marketing profeciency. And it’s not that hard!

You need to be observant. You need to stay ahead of the trend curve.

If your book sales is pathetic, it is probably because you are very lethargic and unrealistic about the whole process. You need to be ready to educate yourself about the money mechanisms behind the making of your book. You need to embrace the change, be shrewd about the sales and hustle hard!

When you write think like a writer but when you sell your books think like a business person.
