Running Alone

Some of us are running alone.

We’re not running a marathon, we’re running alone.

The Marathons that you often see on TV  – the pop ones, are orchestrated by a bunch of people, running together, towards a common goal. They are better organized. They know they start at a particular point, end at another, have a standard set of predictable rules, a well-composed route through which they receive regular refreshments.

When you run a marathon, you have a date announced several months or sometimes even a year in advance. You have an audience, a route, excitement, energy, and attention.  Marathons are the best possible forms of running, with the best possible support, raining all over you.

But the other kind of running is the one where you pick up your sports shoes, shut the door behind you, and bolt out into the world,  and come back home only after twenty-eight kilometers. You don’t have a route, you don’t get regular refreshments, and you don’t have an audience.

This is a rare kind of a run. It’s not a marathon. It’s not a race. You’re just running alone.

It’s worth something very special to you, it’s stitched into the dream and goals you have set for yourself, that the world probably does not even know about. Much of what creative people do when it comes to working on a project – be it a new novel, a film, a piece of music, a new business, a piece of art or developing a career in a very competitive space with nothing but your merit – is exceptionally close to the rare kind of running.

We’re all running alone. I know for sure that I am. With my books, my stories, my academic and professional goals – I am on a very solo marathon.

Most people around me don’t even know that I am running. I never had a start time. I cannot see a finish line, from where I am right now. There aren’t any risk-proof routes that are filled with a cheering audience and bottles of water.

No wonder it’s so difficult.

XOXO,

Bala.
