WHAT IT TAKES: REALISTIC UGC NET ADVICE FOR THE UNMOTIVATED STUDENTS

It’s been over 20 days since UGC announced the NET results for the December 2019 session, and I’ve been genuinely wanting to write a blog about it. I also wanted the blog to be one that would truly serve people, and I wanted the value in it to truly inspire and push people to do more and better with their lives.

Tip 1: Consistency in the little things.

When it comes to these really big tasks such as preparing for a competitive exam that almost 10 Lakh people sit for, with a mere success rate of 6%, or preparing to launch a business, or preparing for a final competition as an athlete, people often think those are the times you need to buckle down. But no, its the small things in your preparation journey that are going to dictate your success. The smallest things, such as how you eat on a day-to-day basis, to how much exercise you get, to the fact that you have to clear out your desk, and read a non-negotiable 10 pages of your text book every single day – these are the little things that stack up to the final big success.

How can you be successful at the big things, when you can’t even be successful at the little things?

Tip 2: Take up the challenges!

I cleared the exam without quitting my job and without joining any coaching class.

Everywhere I turned, I was surrounded by people who were full-time aspirants, and did that make me insecure? A little bit, yes, I felt like I was taking a huge risk – preparing for such a high feat without clearing up the time so many people on Quora claimed was needed for this exam.

It was a huge challenge. But in order to be successful, YOU HAVE TO TACKLE CHALLENGES head on!

You have to get out of your comfort zone, and do things that make you uneasy. One of the things that I’ve lived by is putting myself through peaks of high  performance by putting myself through a tight schedule. The last quarter of 2019 was incredibly challenging period for me, but it ended with me reaping the fruits of all the hard work I sowed.

I do not want to get too comfortable, and start living in a safe bubble of zero growth. That’s why I take up every speaking opportunity I get. That’s why I always take up extremely demanding academic challenges. I want to do these things on a consistent basis because I know – if I don’t do it, I’m going to become comfortable, and uninspired.

Do the things that you know are going to make you uncomfortable and seem like a lot of work – but you KNOW are the exact things you should be doing to grow.

Tip3: Acknowledge your privileges.

This  last tip is all about my mindset throughout this journey.

Every single time I felt depressed and decided to quit, and all those times when I saw my friends do fun things, and I had to come to my books after a long day of work, and study, I simply reminded myself that I had the privilege to even consider doing these ‘not so fun’ things.

Doing the “not fun” things in life is a way of demonstrating excellence. Re-frame anything that you have to do, but don’t want to do, as something you GET to do.

It’s a privilege to take the UGC NET exam.

It’s a privilege to work hard.

It’s a privilege to have the study material, the time and the resources (money, yes money!) to even have the choice to apply for and write this exam.

It’s a privilege to do do a lot of ‘un fun’ things in this life of yours that millions can only still dream of.

If you’re ever lazy and unmotivated to get something important done in your life, reflect on how privileged you are to even have the option to do it, that not many people do.

Cherish that.

XOXO,

Bala.
